Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics — Storyline

The new series, Bangers & Cash: Restoring Classics, will follow the journey of a vehicle purchased at a Mathewsons classic car auction, before being repaired, restored and then re-auctioned in order to try and find the vehicle a new home and loving owner.

The first series started on Thursday 21 July 2022 and will see vehicles such as a 1980s Vauxhall Astra GTE whose hot hatch days look long behind it, a MG Montego Turbo with its engine in the boot, and a rare Lotus Elan S1 that hasn't seen a road for 47 years. The team also revisit some old favourites from previous series of Bangers & Cash.

Season 1

• E1: Vauxhall Astra GTE (2022-07-21) — A sun-bleached red Vauxhall Astra GTE gives the team a headache. They also buy a classic French moped and catch up on the restoration of a barn find Mini Cooper S.
• E2: Vanden Plas saloon (2022-07-28) — The team gamble on restoring a Vanden Plas saloon from the 1970s and a child's tricycle from the 1960s. Plus, catch up on the restoration of a rare Sunbeam Lotus
• E3: Francis Barnett Plover (2022-08-04) — Derek encourages the team to buy a Francis Barnett Plover at auction. Plus, the wheels come off the restoration of an MG Metro.
• E4: Ford Capri (2022-08-11) — Derek thinks a 29,000-mile Ford Capri should be kept original. Plus, a Hercules women's racing bike from the '50s.
• E5: MGB (2022-08-18) — Derek picks out a solid-looking 1969 MGB for the team to look out for at auction. After winning it is sent to a father-and-son team to restore.

• E2: CZ & Nova (2023-05-19) — The team break with tradition and actually follow Dave Mathewson’s advice on what to restore – he points to a 1992 Vauxhall Nova Merit Plus
• E3: Golf GTI Convertible (2023-05-26) — The team restore a 1988 Golf GTI Convertible – an iconic hot hatch – along with a wooden launch boat and catch-up on a Mk1 Austin Mini.
• E4: Renault Clio Williams 2 (2023-06-02) — A super-rare Renault Clio Williams 2 in F1 blue with contrasting gold alloys has turned Dave Mathewson an interesting shade of green.

• E1: Reliant Scimitar GTC & Honda CBR (2023-10-12) — A super rare Reliant Scimitar GTC undergoes an expert recommission, leaving no bolt unturned. And a Honda CBR superbike from the 80s is in need of repair.
• E2: Bugatti replica (2023-10-19) — The team are on the hunt to restore one of the greatest names in motoring history – the Bugatti. But with a strict budget they settle for a replica.
• E3: Fast Ford (2023-10-26) — The team take on a modern day fast Ford to see if a 'quick flip' could make a few quid and revisit a 3 year MG restoration project that's still not finished.
• E4: Alfa and Dolly (2023-11-02) — A 90s Alfa with electrical issues lives up to its stereotype and the team revisit a road roller, four years on. They also tackle a French motoring icon, the Citroen 2CV6 Dolly.
• E5: Hillman GT (2023-11-09) — The Restoring Classics team take Derek's advice when he sniffs out the rarest car they've ever taken on – the last remaining Hillman GT.
• E6: Land Rover S1 (2023-11-16) — The team lift the shutters on their biggest restoration to date in the shape of a Series 1 Land Rover. But does that mean record profit or history making loss?

• E1: 1981 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit (2024-05-16) — The team fly the flag for King and country with one of their most luxurious purchases to date – a 1981 Rolls Royce Silver Spirit.
• E2: VW Beetle (2024-05-23) — The team think they can smell profit by choosing one of the simplest cars ever built, the VW Beetle.

• E6: 1939 Three-wheeled Morgan F4 (2024-06-20) — The Restoring Classics team set out on a Pre-War challenge with a 1939 three-wheeled Morgan F4 -and aptly named Russ Storer from MG Mecca is still keen to take it on.

• E1: 1971 Citroën DS21 Pallas (2024-11-14) — The team invest in a piece of French art this week – a 1971 Citroën DS21 Pallas.
• E2: MGC & Fiat Seicento (2024-11-21) — Derek picks out a super low mileage MGC and the team pays a little too much to secure it. They also take a punt on a 2001 Fiat Seicento!
• E3: Robin Reliant and Mamod Steam (2024-11-28) — This could be the cheapest pair of restorations the Restoring Classics team have done so far! A three-wheeler Reliant Robin is sent to father and son specialists Melvyn and Adam. A

• E4: Volvo / Insight (2025-05-01) — The Bangers team can’t believe their luck when a 1970s family-favourite, a Volvo 144, rolls through Mathewson with just 15,000 miles on the clock.
